THE PURSUIT OF WISDOM

Above all and before all, do this: Get Wisdom!

Write this at the top of your list: Get Understanding!

Proverbs 4:7.

Wisdom is the ability to get things right, to judge rightly, and to make the right decision when faced with multiple options. Wisdom is knowing right from wrong and correcting your wrong into right.

Life is complicated. Too many decisions to make. There are many sides to a story and many views on different issues. To produce the best decision, one needs wisdom.

Major Biblical events in the Bible happened because of wisdom or a lack of it. From the fall of man to man’s redemption, wisdom played a pivotal role.

The Bible says wisdom is the principal thing; note the word principal. Meaning wisdom is the main factor. Get Wisdom! The Bible also says: Get Understanding!

It is not negotiable. It is a command! It is one thing to get wisdom; however, do you understand the knowledge you have obtained?

What is Wisdom?

Proverbs 4:5-11 summarises wisdom, verse six, “Stick with wisdom, and she will stick to you, protecting you throughout your days. She will rescue all those who passionately listen to.”

Wisdom keeps you from danger. A wise man is respected among his peers. Wisdom is the ability to think thoroughly before acting and the grace to weigh in your words before speaking and saying the right words at the appropriate time. Wisdom helps you walk on the right path. Wisdom corrects, reproves, refrains, restricts and preserves. Wisdom is being discreet.

Proverbs 2:9-15 sums it all up. The eleventh verse says, “Discretion shall preserve thee, Understanding will keep thee.” This means wisdom and Understanding cannot be separated; having wisdom but lacking Understanding will sound foolish.

Wisdom is the fear of the Lord, And the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Proverbs 9:10. The Message translation says, “Skilled living gets its start in the Fear-of-God,

insight into life from knowing a Holy God.”

Where is Wisdom?

Where can we find this wisdom? Wisdom is not shared. Job 28:1-28 summarizes wisdom: it cannot be bought. There is a place to find another thing; however, searching for wisdom takes a lot of work. You know where rare earth minerals are found; gold and silver can be mined. How can you mine wisdom? In verses 7 to 8, These are treasures no bird of prey can see,

no falcon’s eye observes. No wild animal has walked upon these treasures; no lion has ever set his paw there. The treasure is called wisdom; how can we get it?

There is only one place to get his Pure Wisdom. In James 3:17 But the wisdom from above is first pure. It is also peace-loving, gentle, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favouritism and is always sincere.

The first and most important characteristic of this wisdom is its Purity. Also, it is peaceful. It is a wisdom without blemish. It is only attainable by being a friend of God and aligning yourself with the plan and purpose of God. Success outside God’s plan is no success at all.

James 1:5 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, who will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. God is the sole custodian of knowledge to access the wisdom, Fear God, and Depart from Evil. Job 28:28 And this is what he says to all humanity:

‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.'”

Who is Wisdom?

Christ is the wisdom of God; 1 Corinthians 1:24b confirms this. Christ is the power and wisdom of God. If we want to have supremacy in wisdom, we first need to acknowledge who the carrier of this treasure is: Christ Jesus, presently with us through the comforter of the Holy Spirit. The wisdom attained from knowing God is Priceless. Complete wisdom comes from knowing Christ.

The pursuit of wisdom is a search for Righteousness, Sanctification and Holiness in God through Christ Jesus. He is the fulness of the God Head Body dwells with Him; hence, we are complete in Chris Jesus.

Colossians 2:9-10 For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So, you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head of every ruler and authority.

As a result of Christ Jesus, we have obtained supreme wisdom over all aspects of our lives and the grace to rise above sins. We now navigate life’s ordeal, constantly guided by the Holy Spirit to please God.

Finally, we nurture wisdom from above, which is first pure in salvation and peaceable about all—consciously avoiding the lust of this world and dwelling entirely in the love and wisdom of God through Christ Jesus.
