Who are you? I just asked a very simple and easy question, but the answer is very difficult to get. Let us go to the bible, am sure we will be able to answer this simple question by the time God is done speaking to us.
Let me refresh your minds.
After the fall of man, it took 42 generations to have the once close relationship and fellowship man use to have with God. Jesus came and reconcile man back to God. But before that time there was a period known as the time of silence.
From the time in creation, God usually spoke through messengers (prophets, high priests, seers etc.) and at the end of the old testament which is the book Malachi, God did not speak anymore for the next 400 years. It was a time when no one knew anything nor heard anything. It was a time of the total blackout.
John the Baptist came into the scene. He is known as the forerunner of Jesus Christ.
This is where we are heading! In the gospel of John chapter one, the people asked John a very simple question, “ Who Are you?”
John 1:19. And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
The question of Identity
Who really are we? Let us be honest, do you really have an idea of who you really are? Do you understand the kind of destiny you have? Do you have an idea of the life you are supposed to be living? Do you understand the career you should be pursuing? Who really are You?
The day you are able to answer this simple question, your life will never be the same again. People are living in this world without identity. They have no purpose, mission, vision, goal, or life! This is so sad.
When you fail to know who you really are, you are automatically a failure.
When you have answered the question of your identity, you are already on the pathway to greatness. Your identity determines the actions and reactions you take and make now.
Joseph knew who he was; he couldn’t trade his God-given vision for the pleasure of sex; Ruth understood that her identity was found in Naomi, and she would lead her to her Boaz. She just couldn’t let go of Nomi, Oprah did not understand this. Joshua knew he was meant to be a leader; he stayed focused, paying close attention to his identity. David understood his identity; he knew he was meant to be a king. He acted towards that path of kingship. The prodigal son got back to his senses and discovered his identity; he just couldn’t continue living with pigs and eating the same meal prepared for pigs. He went back home, back to his roots.
When you really know who you are, my friend, you can’t waste your life on worldly things and things that will not benefit your life. Never! You will not continue to dwell in all kinds of sins; you will definitely flee from all forms of sin.
The day you really understand who you really are, you will not sacrifice your destiny for pleasure.
God is searching for people who understand who they are to fill them with His raw power and fire.
John the Baptist knew his identity; he could answer the simple question.
John 1:20-21.
And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.
I am not Christ! This is a very simple and straightforward answer. He refused to take the wrong identity. People were asking him these questions. They knew the Bible. They were expecting Jesus. Notice that John the Baptist refused to fit into Jesus’s shoes. He refused to bear the wrong name. Remember, people take fake identities. John the Baptist chose to accept who he was.
They asked him again in verse 21.
And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he said, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.
He said a big NO! Elijah was a man known for demonstrating/manifesting God’s power. The people felt John was Elijah. John the Baptist chose to remain where God had called him to be and to do the assignment God had given him.
In verse 22 the people finally reveal who they really are and say
“Then said they unto him, Who art thou? We may give them an answer that they sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?”
This makes us understand that people are waiting to know and understand who we really are. The devil is on a mission to find out. Because the day they understand us, that day they are able to predict us.
In verse 23, the honest John the Baptist was revealed.
He said I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
He answered in the words of the scriptures to show that the scriptures were fulfilled in him. He answered this simple question in a very humble, modest, and self-denying expression.
His identity, goal, vision, and mission were to gather the people in preparation for our Lord Jesus Christ.
When you know and truly understand your identity, you will overcome the spirit of destiny misplacement, you overcome the spirit of lust and pride. John the Baptist was mistaken to be the Messiah, he did not connive at it; never! He refused to dwell in the office where he did not belong.
Many people who don’t know or have lost their identity tend to make this great mistake. They fit in the wrong place in life. It is a big mistake when a doctor is fitting into the position of a tailor….
Your identity is what makes you different and unique from others. It differentiates you, makes you outstanding, and ultimately successful. If a man’s difference is spotted, whether positive or negative, it is outstanding because there’s something unique, which makes him different from other people.
You must study what makes you positively unique (differences) and not your weaknesses; this will help you get closer to your assignment.
Your success in life is your identity and is strictly related to what makes you stand out.
When you understand your identity, life becomes simple. You are able to answer these three questions, which are:
- Who are You? This solves your IDENTITY! John the Baptist knew who he was. When they asked him Who are You? He could answer! He said, “I AM THE VOICE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS!” This is it. John 1:19-25.
- Why are you Here? This solves your purpose! Your assignment is found in your purpose, which influences your decisions and approaches to life.
- How Shall I Be? This solves how you FUNCTION AND HOW YOU OPERATE! It directs you to your destiny with ease!
Finally!! Answering the questions will narrow down your life to a simple one. You will actually remove confusion, frustration, stress, anxiety, and worry from your life, leading you to a successful life and great achievements.
Some People are Satisfied with it if it is good; Some want it Better. The Best is only Good Enough For Me!!!!🙌👏💒💎

Wow this is the same message that has been preached at church twice now, it’s definitely a Word in season.
We need to know who we are, and we are children of the most high God.
Let’s not forget this scripture
And the evil spirit answered and said, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?”
Acts 15:19
God bless you for sharing this powerful Word.
Especially enjoyed the part about the period of silence, deep and powerful revelation. 😀🔥🙌👏
